Callow the key to Self's hopes with 60kg

Wednesday 23 July 2014, 3:28pm

Co-trainer David Feek expects jockey Noel Callow's vigour to give Self Sense every chance of carrying 60kg to victory again at Caulfield.

Callow's ability to use his whip in both hands was on show during Self Sense's last win with 60kg over 2000 metres at Caulfield, which followed the promising performer's success at Traralgon at his previous outing.

Feek, who trains in partnership with David Brideoake, said Self Sense's physical and mental immaturity made him a tricky horse to ride but Callow's experience has helped the three-year-old.

"He's a bit of a quirky horse but Noel Callow has been able to get a good tune out of him," Feek said.

"I don't think you'd want to be in the trenches with him. I'm not potting his temperament, he's got no reason not to try, but he's still mentally immature and physically immature.

"He needs good, strong handling and Noel gives him that."

Self Sense will tackle 2400m for the first time in Saturday's Mypunter.com Handicap.

Feek says the big weight was some concern for Self Sense but the rising four-year-old was capable of proving he was worthy of a country cups campaign next year.

"He's in good shape and the way he won last time out, we were pleased," Feek said.

"Once his mind's made up, he goes about his business well and he's quite a talented individual.

"If he goes through his grades, he could be an ideal Warrnambool Cup horse."
