Walker looking to Melbourne with Protector

Friday 18 July 2014, 9:11am

English trainer Ed Walker is considering options including the Melbourne spring for Glorious Protector.

The Walker-trained Ruscello won the Lexus Stakes at Flemington to earn a spot in the 2013 Melbourne Cup but only managed to beat one horse home in the main event.

Walker said Glorious Protector would either run in the Ebor at York next month or head to America for the St Leger after his seven length win at Newmarket last Saturday.

"It will either be the Ebor or the American St Leger for him and he'll be kept in both," Walker said.

"Long-term he's the type to go to Australia for the Lexus Stakes that we won with Ruscello last year. He's got plenty of pace."

"Going to America is tempting given he bled at Ascot (before his win) as he could run on Lasix which almost eliminates that possibility. Clearly he didn't bleed at Newmarket, though.
