Qld race dates restructured for new season

Monday 14 July 2014, 12:33pm

Tuesday racing in Queensland will be scrapped as part of a revised racing schedule which accommodates the upcoming renovations to Eagle Farm and a commitment to country racing.

Racing Queensland chairman Kevin Dixon said many of the Tuesday TAB meetings, held mainly in the state's north, would be transferred to Sundays to maximise return.

"Tuesdays have proven to be non-profitable for clubs and have lacked the support of the industry, so we decided to move these meetings to ensure a stronger return," Dixon said.

"At a recent meeting of club chairmen, it was universally agreed that Tuesday meetings are of little benefit. By transferring many of those meetings to Sunday, the clubs now have an opportunity to capitalise on weekend attendances and improve their race day returns."

Under RQ's amended race dates for 2014/15, there will be 429 TAB meetings and 300 non-TAB events.

The amended dates were released after the government allocated $22 million to redevelop Brisbane's premier racetrack.

Doomben will hold most of the Saturday meetings with Ipswich moving from Friday to Wednesday.

Dixon said the next phase of RQ's strategy would be rolled out shortly, including the restructuring of prize money.

Meanwhile, RQ will also help Ipswich improve facilities to host the metropolitan class mid-week meetings.
