Starspangledbanner to return to Coolmore

Sunday 13 July 2014, 4:57pm

Sub-fertile stallion Starspangledbanner will be given another chance at Coolmore Stud in Ireland following a stakes double at Royal Ascot.

The Wow Signal won the Coventry Stakes and Anthem Alexander claimed the Queen Of Mary Stakes to put dual hemisphere Group One winner Starspangledbanner on the map as a sire.

Formerly trained in Australia by Leon Corstens and later by Aidan O'Brien, Starspangledbanner's first crop of European runners has produced four winners from 12 runners from just 33 juveniles.

As a result of his fertility problems, the horse was sent back to Australia where he completed his second season covering a small, carefully managed book at Anthony Mithen's Rosemont Stud in Victoria.

"He'll cover his second book of mares at Rosemont in Victoria before heading back to Coolmore after Christmas," Coolmore's Richard Henry told the Racing Post.

"He's done so well and made such an exciting start, it would be foolish not to have him back.

"A fee for the horse will be decided at a later date."

The seven-year-old son of Choisir won two Group One races in Australia before being transferred to Coolmore for another two elite wins in England.

After his first season at stud, he was put back in training in 2012 without success.

He then returned to Australia and of the 51 mares he covered in his first season at Rosemont, 24 have been confirmed in foal.
