One-horse trainer after more Aust success

Thursday 10 July 2014, 5:25pm

Graeme Boyd does not fit the mould of the average horse trainer.

For a start, he only has one horse. And that's the way he likes it.

"One horse is lots of fun. Two horses becomes work and I don't need a job," Boyd said.

"I just enjoy it and I enjoy the travelling."

The horse Boyd is currently devoting his time to is the up-and-coming mare Tarloshan, early favourite for Saturday's Sydney Spring Carnival On Sale Now Mile (1600m) at Randwick.

But travelling solo with his only horse is nothing new to the New Zealand trainer.

Boyd adopted a similar role with the now-retired Ginga Dude who won stakes races in Melbourne and Brisbane and finished third in the 2010 Mackinnon Stakes.

The experience didn't inspire him to expand his stable and he may not have returned to training if it wasn't for Tarloshan.

The mare won two of her first three starts for Boyd's close friend, trainer Janice Dalley, highlighted by a victory over Telepathic who subsequently performed at Group level during the Brisbane winter carnival.

Boyd shares in the ownership of Tarloshan with Dalley's husband Andy and when the mare showed potential, the decision was made to chase the better prize money in Australia.

That's when Boyd stepped in.

"They couldn't travel and the prize money is better over here so I'm lucky I got her to train," Boyd said.

"But I take no credit. Janice and Andy have done all the groundwork."

Tarloshan has won her past two starts for Boyd in midweek city company, earning herself a shot at Saturday grade, and popularity with early punters who have her as $3.40 favourite.
