Miss Cover Girl out to extend unbeaten run

Thursday 10 July 2014, 12:15pm

Boom two-year-old Miss Cover Girl has done so well since her last win that she will have at least one more start before the end of the winter.

Trainer Kelly Schweida had planned to spell Miss Cover Girl after she made it four wins from four starts in the McLachlan Memorial Stakes at the Sunshine Coast two weeks ago.

But after talking with the filly's owners he decided to accept with Miss Cover Girl in the Breakfast Creek Hotel Handicap at Doomben on Saturday.

Schweida is a great believer in chasing QTIS bonus money while it is on offer and Miss Cover Girl will collect $56,000 if she wins on Saturday.

Miss Cover Girl has already won $107,000 of which about half is in QTIS bonus payments.

"It is hard not to chase that sort of bonus money. And there is an old saying about never spelling an in-form filly or mare," Schweida said.

"Provided her blood is OK on Friday she will be starting."

Schweida believes Miss Cover Girl can prove herself to be something special in the long term.

"I think she will get 1400 metres to 1600 metres on her racing style and breeding," he said.

"I don't think she will be out of place in southern feature races."

Meanwhile, bookmakers have Tim Bell and Michael Cahill as $1.80 joint favourites to win the Brisbane jockeys' premiership.

Bell has stormed home late in the season, making up an 11-win lead held by Cahill in April.

Cahill went to 54 wins on Romanarma and Bell made it 53 wins on Wingarra at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

Both jockeys have six rides at Doomben on Saturday and there are six city meetings left in the season.
