Greg Ryan's bid for the national jockeys' premiership will depend on the timing - and success - of a likely appeal against the first running and handling charge of his career.

Ryan was on Thursday suspended for six weeks for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to give Grey Pariz every chance to win a race at Dubbo on June 20.

Stewards were critical of Ryan's actions in two sections of the race, believing he didn't make an effort to go forward on Grey Pariz in the early stages and did not ride with enough vigour between the 400m and 200m.

Grey Pariz was backed from $3.20 to start a $2.50 favourite and finished third after coming from last in the 14-horse field.

Ryan holds a narrow lead in the national jockeys' premiership with 142-1/2 wins, just ahead of Dean Yendall and Victorian riders Brad Rawiller.

His ban is due to start on July 9 and expire on August 20 but he is expected to appeal Thursday's decision, which could allow him to ride under a stay of proceedings until the matter can be heard.
