Breeding barn next for star mares

The final Group One race of the year was a triumph for Gai Waterhouse and three-year-old Cosmic Endeavour and the swan song for her older counterparts Red Tracer, Steps In Time and Angel Of Mercy.

Tommy Berry rode Cosmic Endeavour to a narrow win over Angel Of Mercy who had her first and last run for new owner Katsumi Yoshida in Saturday's Tattersall's Tiara at Eagle Farm.

Yoshida paid $575,000 for the Gerald Ryan-trained mare at last month's National Broodmare Sale and the Group Three winner will now head to Arrowfield to be served by Snitzel.

"She had a really good preparation and ran a great race in the Tiara," Ryan said.

"She was a great mare for her previous owners and now has a Group One placing for Mr Yoshida."

The Chris Waller-trained Red Tracer, winner of last year's Tiara, finished sixth just behind Coolmore Classic winner Steps In Time from the Joe Pride stable.

Both Red Tracer and Steps In Time will go to Kitchwin Hills Stud while their owners choose their future partners.

Pride's achievement to get Steps In Time to win the Coolmore over 1500 metres, a distance many thought was beyond the mare, ranks highly with the trainer.

"I was really happy with that," he said.

"It happened on my birthday and it was a great present for me as well as the owners."

Steps In Time retires as the winner of nine races from 27 starts and more than $1 million prize money while Red Tracer goes out as the winner of 15 from 38 and more than $2.3 million.

Red Tracer also won last year's Myer Classic at Flemington in a close finish over her younger stablemate Catkins who finished fourth in the Tiara.
