Aidan Holt loses weight battle

Sunday 22 June 2014, 4:17pm

Star Brisbane apprentice Aidan Holt has hung up his saddle after admitting weight has beaten him.

He had his last two rides at Eagle Farm on Saturday finishing second on Agitate and unplaced on Dayita.

He missed the winning ride on Epic when he could not make 57.5kg and was replaced by Anthony Allen.

He also had trouble getting to the 58.5kg Agitate carried.

Holt, 21, has ridden 99 winners in total and 44 this season including 25 in the metropolitan area.

He led the overall jockeys premiership for the early part of the current season but weight has gradually dragged down his career.

"That is it for me at this stage. I will keep my jockey's licence but I just can't waste any more," a distressed Holt said.

"I was wasting so hard recently I was coughing up blood. There were a few tears when I had to make my decision but I have to think of my health."

Holt said he would continue to ride trackwork and did not completely rule out a comeback.

After breaking his wrist in December, Holt said he had struggled with his weight since his return from the injury in April.
