Hay List enjoys a day out at the races

Saturday 21 June 2014, 4:01pm

Although he was retired late last year, triple Group One-winning sprinter Hay List still likes nothing more than a day at the races.

Dogged by injury throughout his career, the hulking gelding now lives on trainer John McNair's Central Coast property and accompanies the stable runners to the track when they race.

He came to Randwick on Saturday with Miss Alibi and was given a spin of the track by Brenton Avdulla.

"He still gets ridden every day," McNair said.

"I reckon he is around 640 kilos now. Eating is what he likes best.

"He enjoys going to the races and I think he always will."

Avdulla said the eight-year-old still felt like a racehorse.

"He hasn't lost the feeling of power," he said.

"He really enjoyed being out there. He loved it."

Hay List claimed his first Group One in the spring of 2010 in the Manikato Stakes.

Black Caviar then came along and he was the horse who always tried hardest against her.

The two met six times and he finished second to her on four occasions.

She was absent when Hay List won the 2011 All Aged Stakes and the 2012 Newmarket Handicap under top weight of 58.5kg in what was generally considered his greatest victory.
