Oxford Poet loses his gear

Saturday 14 June 2014, 2:22pm

Apprentice Taylor Marshall has been making headlines for his winners over the past few weeks but would probably rather have one ride over again.

After making a meal of the start of the Sydney Markets (1500m), Oxford Poet crossed to the front and soon after, his saddle shifted, the lead bag flew through the air and then the packing which had been underneath the saddle also came off.

Marshall subsequently weighed in light and the Kim Waugh-trained three-year-old was disqualified from his fifth placing.

Stewards put the incident down to unfortunate circumstances and could find no fault with Marshall's gear which he had used on the horse before.

The race was won by Dowdstown Charlie ($6) who backed up from his third to In A Knot at Randwick a week ago and went through a gap late to beat Vite Loni ($19) by a neck.

It was the David Payne-trained gelding's second win from 20 starts and jockey Jeff Lloyd said he did not make things easy for himself.

"He still tried to throw it away," Lloyd said.

"He doesn't make it easy. The slow track helped but I still thought it might not be soft enough."
