Trainer Trent Pennuto will know if eccentric mare Nordic But Nice is on her game before she leaves the mounting yard at Mornington.
Nordic But Nice's antics have all but forced Pennuto to race her exclusively on her home track, which is the venue of Monday's Join As A Member Handicap (1000m).
Pennuto says Nordic But Nice has a tendency to refuse to move until she is ready before going out on the track in her work and races.
"She just freezes and it doesn't matter what you do with her. Those sorts of horses, you can't do much other than wait for her to go," Pennuto said.
"It's only when the jockey goes to get on her. Once you get her going, you have to keep her going.
"She doesn't do herself any justice because once she's on the track and going, she's a sweet mare."
Stewards have previously barred the five-year-old from racing but Pennuto was confident the mare could produce her best form after her solid first-up run on May 6.
Pennuto's main concern is the 1000m distance of Monday's $35,000 assignment.
"I'm just lucky that there are races at Mornington for her and we have got a few options on her home track for her," Pennuto said.
"She's not a genuine 1000-metre horse but she's better at 1200 and hopefully 1400 metres this time in."
Apprentice Jye McNeil has the task of getting Nordic But Nice out on to the track before tackling five rivals in the benchmark 78 contest.
Pennuto will also run promising galloper Where To Next in the Brown's Sawdust & Shavings Handicap.
Where To Next had little luck when ninth over 1500m at Mornington on may 25.
The Mornington public holiday meeting holds metropolitan status.
