Transporter returns to winner's list

Saturday 7 June 2014, 12:45pm

Giant galloper Transporter has again shown his liking for Brisbane, breaking a year-long drought from the winner's circle to score at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Transporter was touted as a Melbourne spring carnival horse after his wonderful winter campaign last year which included placings in the Hollindale Stakes and Lord Mayors Cup.

However, he failed to fire in the spring and was given a long spell before coming back for this year's Brisbane winter carnival.

Transporter ($5) scored his first win since April last year when he careered away in the straight to score by 2-1/2 lengths over Choice Bro ($4.60) with favourite Elmantosh ($3.70) another two lengths away third in the Listed Strawberry Road Hcp (1600m).

It was Transporter's fifth win at Eagle Farm and came at his fourth run this preparation with trainer John Thompson saying the six-year-old had been half a run short for much of his winter campaign.

"He ran a good fourth last start and we knew he was back on track," Thompson said.

Transporter will now be set for the Tatts Mile (1600m) in a fortnight.

Winning jockey Jim Byrne said Transporter had been working up to a win and his last-start fourth had been full of merit.

"He is a big old horse who takes time to work up to his best. But he does hold form well and it was a good run today," Byrne said.

Jockey Tommy Berry said Choice Bro had the run of the race but Transporter was too strong on the line.
