Griante makes it three-straight at Sandown

Saturday 31 May 2014, 4:54pm

Promising three-year-old Griante has capped a successful preparation with her third straight city win.

Sent out a $6 chance in Saturday's Le Pine Funerals Plate (1600m) at Sandown, Griante was aided by apprentice Kayla Nisbet's three kilogram claim and led all the way.

Griante began quickly and kicked strongly around the home turn to hold a healthy advantage on straightening.

She extended her lead to about four lengths before tiring late to score by 1-1/4 lengths over Miss Maggiebeel ($7) with Lady Lakshmi ($5) a neck away third.

The victory was Griante's fourth from eight starts and followed back-to-back wins at Caulfield.

"She has been a really good filly," co-trainer David Brideoake said.

"She has developed and actually got stronger through the preparation. She can go away now and we'll find something in the spring."

Brideoake, who trains in partnership with David Feek, says he will not get carried away with lofty spring ambitions as he believes it is a tough transition from three-year-old fillies' races to taking on older mares.

"I'm fairly reserved with (fillies) turning four-year-olds going to spring," he said.

"Four-year-olds against the older mares is tough, but somewhere down the track there will be a race for her."

Brideoake bred Griante and the filly is a close relation to Grand Journey who Brideoake trained to win the 2008 WA Oaks and WA Derby.

Griante is by Grand Journey's sire Good Journey out of a half-sister to the mare.
