Boom first Perth runner for Gollan

Sunday 18 November 2012, 1:10pm

A Group One win with his first starter in Perth. That's the goal Tony Gollan has set himself with Spirit Of Boom in Saturday's Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot.

Melbourne Cup week was a challenging time for Gollan with Spirit Of Boom.

The five-year-old entire ran an unlucky second to Fontelina in the Yellowglen Stakes on Derby Day, then backed up a week later to finish seventh in the Patinack Farm Classic won by Mental.

"In the Patinack he pulled too hard then hung in against the rail which was the worst part of the track," Gollan said.

Spirit Of Boom will have his first look at Ascot when he gallops at Breakfast with the Stars on Tuesday morning.

"I'd like him to draw a barrier between four and seven in the Winterbottom," Gollan said.

"He's the type of horse who needs to switch off with a bit of cover and hit the line on a dry track.

"Even though he's raced well down the straight at Flemington, I think he's a better horse around a turn."

Spirit Of Boom will be ridden by Nash Rawiller who is looking to end a Group One drought this season.

Rawiller also will ride Epsom Handicap winner Fat Al in the Railway Stakes.

Group One winner Temple Of Boom won't join his younger half-brother in Perth.

Gollan will spell the gelding before attempting back-to-back wins in The Galaxy (1100m) in the autumn.

Too Many Reds, who failed at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day after finishing just a short half head second to Famous Seamus in a Listed sprint in Sydney, will be spelled in Victoria before returning to Queensland later next month.

"I'll be aiming him at Listed and Group races like the Weetwood Handicap next campaign," Gollan said.
