10,000 win to boost Queensland breeding

Sunday 25 May 2014, 5:15pm

Owner Scott McAlpine believes Spirit of Boom's win in the Doomben 10,000 will give the Queensland breeding industry a much-needed boost.

Spirit of Boom will stand at McAlpine's Eureka Stud on the Darling Downs in the new breeding season.

Queensland breeders have had a lean time with the clearance rate at the Magic Millions March Sale, disappointing, and foal numbers down.

But McAlpine believes good times are around the corner and Spirit of Boom can lead the way.

Eureka has stood some outstanding stallions including Semipalatinsk, Lumley Road, Brave Warrior and Piccolo.

Spirit of Boom will have at least 120 mares in his first season and McAlpine is already impressed with the quality.

"It has been a while since a well performed horse has gone to stud in Queensland," McAlpine said.

"To win the Group One William Reid Stakes with him this year was great.

"But to win such a high-profile race as the Doomben 10,000 and quinella it with his half brother Temple of Boom, who won a Galaxy, is invaluable."

"So we have a dual Group One winner who is a half brother to a Group One winner. It reads well on paper, doesn't it?"

Spirit of Boom, by Sequalo, and Temple of Boom, by Piccolo, are both out of the now deceased mare Temple Spirit.

The Doomben 10,000 result was an all Queensland affair with Buffering filling third place.

It was the first Queensland trifecta in a Group One race since Unequalled beat Buck's Pride and Meg's Ego in the 1993 Doomben 10,000.

Tony Gollan, who trains both Spirit Of Boom and Temple Of Boom, said both had pulled up well and would head to the Stradbroke Handicap on June 7.

"They both go on to the Stradbroke which will be Spirit's last run," Gollan said.

"And Temple will go on as long as he is enjoying his racing."
