Lord Of The Sky back to best at Caulfield

Saturday 17 May 2014, 5:25pm

Lord Of The Sky's last-start defeat stunned trainer Robbie Laing but the colt sprung no surprises in his latest Caulfield outing.

Lord Of The Sky went down narrowly as odds-on favourite at Flemington on April 25 but Laing found comfort in the day's stewards' report.

"I was shocked he got beat on Anzac Day but the best news I had all day was the stewards' report," Laing said.

"When they scoped him, they found he had a throat infection with a lot of mucus and that's why he got beaten a head."

The three-year-old recovered quickly to post a smart win in a barrier trial at Cranbourne five days before his strong victory in Saturday's Taralye Listen Learn Speak Plate (1000m).

The abundant early pace of Fab Fevola left apprentice Kayla Nisbet with an easy task of giving Lord Of The Sky a trail behind the front-runner for the first 600 metres.

Lord Of The Sky was left in front when Fab Fevola weakened early in the straight and the $2.70 favourite comfortably held off the challenge of the Robert Smerdon-trained Elite Elle ($5.50) to score by 1-1/2 lengths.

Laing said shin soreness meant he had to handle Lord Of The Sky carefully but the speedster could win again in similar company before he tackles the Listed Monash Stakes (1000m) and the Group Three Bletchingly Stakes (1100m) later in the winter.

"When we can train him like a mature horse, he's right up there in the top echelon of sprinters, I think," Laing said.

"While he's a three-year-old and gets into open sprints on the minimum and claim, the money's too good to pass up."
