Smerdon to test Cape at Caulfield

Monday 12 May 2014, 5:47pm

Robert Smerdon only has one way to assess what he has with two-year-old colt Crimson Cape.

A son of Savabeel, Crimson Cape is bred on staying lines but the trainer says he needs to run the youngster at Caulfield on Saturday to get an indication of which path to take.

Crimson Cape has trialled officially at Cranbourne and jumped out over 800m at Caulfield but his performance under race pressure will determine his short-term future.

Smerdon says he must run Crimson Cape over 1200m to give the two-year-old the chance to provide an accurate picture of his talent.

"It's a bit of a deep-end situation for him because the 1000 metres is too short and the 1400 metres is too far at this stage," Smerdon said.

"The 1200 is the right trip for him at this point but the reality is, it's going to be too tough an assignment.

"At this stage with a Savabeel, you want to give them a raceday experience and see what you've got before you put them away."

Crimson Cape is one of 27 entries for Saturday's two-year-old event along with the Danny O'Brien-trained duo Locket and Lucky Generation.

Locket fetched $300,000 as a yearling and began her career with a fifth behind Sweet And Speedy in a Sale maiden on April 27.

That form stood up when the fourth horse, Not A Happy Camper, went on to finish a narrow second at Group Three level in Adelaide on Saturday.

Cranbourne trainer Nikki Burke has entered Jinx in the $80,000 race after the filly won a trial on her home track on Monday morning.

Robbie Griffiths has also entered the impressive Warrnambool winner Mossbeat.
