Leebaz confirmed for WFA Doomben Cup start

Friday 9 May 2014, 5:11pm

Hawkesbury Gold Cup winner Leebaz will have his campaign extended to take in the Doomben Cup.

Hawkes Racing announced on Friday Leebaz would be sent north for the Group One weight-for-age race with leading jockey James McDonald released from Scone Cup carnival commitments for the stable to take the Group One ride.

Bookmakers reacted to confirmation Leebaz would be a certain Doomben Cup starter by making him the $3.80 equal favourite with Hollindale Stakes winner Streama.

Co-trainer John Hawkes was non-committal about Leebaz lining up at Doomben after the four-year-old made it six wins from nine starts at Hawkesbury.

Hawkes indicated Leebaz could be sent for a spell without completely ruling out a start in the $500,000 race.

Hawkesbury form worked out in last year's Doomben Cup through the Chris Waller-trained Beaten Up.

Beaten Up ran second to Mouro in the Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury before accounting for stablemate Foreteller at Doomben.

With McDonald heading north, Hawkes Racing will call on Dwayne Dunn at Scone.

Dunn will ride last-to-first Hawkesbury Guineas winner Chautauqua in the Scone Guineas.
