Pampelonne to debut for new stable

Monday 5 May 2014, 5:55pm

Troy Corstens is excited to see what Group Two winner Pampelonne produces in his debut for his new stable at Flemington on Saturday.

Corstens has had Pampelonne, who was formerly trained by Tim Martin, in his care for around 14 weeks and is hoping beach and treadmill work will help the sprinter produce his best on race day.

"He's had chronic back issues and we've done a lot of work with him and he goes to the beach two or three times a week down here and he does a lot of work on the treadmill," Corstens said.

"I have a special program for him. And I'm really looking forward to getting him to the races on Saturday."

Corstens said Pampelonne had had one pleasing jump-out at Flemington with apprentice Joe Azzopardi on board.

"If he shows us on Saturday what he showed us in his trial, you're going to see something special," Corstens said.

"But it's easy to do it on trial day. He's just got to do it on match day now."

Five-year-old Pampelonne has been restricted to 15 starts for five wins and races for the first time since his third in the Razor Sharp Handicap in December.

The gelding has not won since the Group Two Shorts in Sydney in the spring of 2012.

Corstens said Martin had suggested connections try a Melbourne trainer, believing the sprinter was better the Melbourne way of going. He also recommended a trainer with access to a treadmill.

"When he's pain free, I think he's a Group One horse," Corstens said.

"But the key is to get him to the track happy and pain free. We've done our best at this stage and he's very well within himself."

Azzopardi will ride Pampelonne in Saturday's 1100m Open Handicap, taking 2kg off the gelding's 58.5kg.

Corstens will have runners in three states on Saturday with Stereosonic in a 1400m race at Flemington, two-year-old She's All That headed to the Listed Darley National Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville and three-year-olds Kraftwerk and Pinstripe Lane in races at Rosehill.
