Qld breeders reveal new prize money model

Thursday 24 April 2014, 2:43pm

Queensland breeders have formally unveiled their plans to boost Queensland's ailing prize money levels through a rejuvenated bonus scheme.

It has been mooted for months that the breeders wanted a $6.5 multi-million injection of state government money to boost the QTIS bonus scheme.

QTIS bonus payments are paid to placegetters in selected two and three-year-old races across the state.

The Queensland Thoroughbred Breeders Association (QTBA) made the proposal to Racing Queensland late last year and since then the two organisations have been working on a final product.

In confirming the details on Thursday, QTBA President Basil Nolan said the proposed improvements were a step in the right direction, which would only strengthen the industry within Queensland.

He said the proposal included expanding QTIS bonus payments to include four-year-old races, a six per cent winning Breeder's Bonus on all QTIS races as well as increasing QTIS to include all two and three-year-old racing in the state.

Mr Nolan said the proposal also would include hosting a race day before the March sale for QTIS horses consisting of eight races worth $100,000 each.

A $500,000 weight-for-age race open to four-year-olds and under for QTIS horses only, was also being discussed.
