Cummings duo set sights on Scone Guineas

Thursday 24 April 2014, 11:12am

Anthony Cummings won everything on Scone Guineas day last year except the race he wanted the most.

The Randwick trainer will on Friday take the first steps towards trying to make up for the loss when two fillies start late autumn campaigns in the same race at Warwick Farm.

Missy Cummings' below-par run in the 2013 Scone Guineas turned out to be the only carnival disappointment for Cummings as he won three races at the meeting - the Denise's Joy Stakes, the Luskin Star Stakes and the Dark Jewel Classic.

In Madame Ginoux and Federica, Cummings is hoping he can set the record straight in next month's Guineas, a three-year-old event that has become a focal point of the richest country racing carnival in Australia.

"They are both lightly raced but they are nice fillies," Cummings said.

"Because they are both eligible for the race, the Scone Guineas is an obvious target and then I'd expect Brisbane to flow on from that."

Madame Ginoux and Federica step out for the first time of their latest campaigns when they contest the Gallipoli Handicap (1200m).

Both fillies broke through for their first win towards the end of 2013 but it is Federica who holds a marginal call when it comes to having a better racetrack profile.

Federica covered ground in her win at Warwick Farm in September, prompting Cummings to rate her a chance of running in the VRC Oaks.

His plans were brought undone when Federica sustained a minor injury in a lead-up race at Moonee Valley and she had to be eased in training before going to the paddock after a Flemington failure in December.

Madame Ginoux made a winning debut at Kembla Grange and finished a heavily backed second at her next run before being put away after ending up down the track in a Rosehill race in early January.
