New Group One plans put in place for Demon

A Brisbane trip is out but trainer Andrew Noblet has an eye on another Group One race for his emerging star Sistine Demon.

Races such as the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap were tossed about as possible Queensland targets after Sistine Demon's six-length romp in last Saturday's Group Three Victoria Handicap at Caulfield.

But Noblet said racing Sistine Demon during the Brisbane winter carnival would cause a rush to have the gelding ready for the Melbourne spring.

Noblet said the decision left him with the option of running in the Listed Anniversary Vase (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday week or the Group One Goodwood over 1200m on May 10.

Noblet is taking advantage of nominations for both races closing within 24 hours of each other.

"It's good because we can compare relative strength of the races and decide from there," Noblet said.

"If the Goodwood shapes as a winnable race for him, then he's a good chance of running in it."

Sistine Demon missed a place the last time he raced over 1200m at Mornington in November before the four-year-old won seven of his eight subsequent starts.

But Noblet is confident Sistine Demon will be sharp enough to take on some of Australia's best sprinters in the Adelaide feature.

The Caulfield-based trainer said Sistine Demon's next run would be his last before his first spell in a year.

Sistine Demon has thrived on having short breaks followed by periods on a water-walker.

Noblet will aim Sistine Demon at big targets on his home track in the spring, including the Group One Memsie Stakes and the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.
