The Quarterback impressive at Caulfield

Saturday 19 April 2014, 4:51pm

Trainer Robbie Griffiths thinks there's something special about The Quarterback and could give him the chance to prove it as soon as next start in the Group One Goodwood in Adelaide.

The Quarterback, who raced to a convincing win over 1200m at Caulfield on Saturday, has already shown his talent against Melbourne's top three-year-olds.

He was placed in the Manfred Stakes and CS Hayes Stakes earlier this campaign before failing in the Australian Guineas when he came out of the race with excuses.

Griffiths freshened the gelding after the Guineas and after an eye-catching run last start at Flemington, The Quarterback favourite at $4.60, flashed through along the inside section to win the Bert Bryant Handicap by 1-3/4 lengths over Jessy Belle ($26).

"I think he's something a bit special," Griffiths said.

"He's always had an unbelievable turn of speed and if he can keep doing that and perfect it at these sort of distances, I think he's got a great future."

Griffiths rates The Quarterback as the most promising horse he has trained.

"He's got the sprint that good horses have," he said.

The Quarterback will have his next start in either the Group One Goodwood (1200m) in three weeks or a week earlier in a Group Two sprint in Adelaide against his own age.
