Veuvelicious earns Champagne Stakes berth

Almost two decades after Brent Stanley won the Caulfield Cup on the David Moodie-owned Arctic Scent, the pair were back as a force in racing at Randwick on Saturday.

Now retired from riding, Stanley prepares a team of 24 horses at Kyneton in Victoria after taking out his trainer's licence 15 months ago.

Veuvelicious, part-owned by Moodie, showcased Stanley's skills in Saturday's Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m), conceding weight to her mostly male rivals and still outclassing them.

Damien Oliver positioned the filly to get a perfect trail behind the speed and she capitalised on the run to for a clear-cut win.

"David Moodie is one of my huge supporters. There are a couple of new owners in there, my wife and my brother-in-law, who we gave shares to. She's a special horse," Stanley said.

"It's a great feeling to be able to know I can prepare a horse to be able to compete against this calibre of horses and trainers who do it year in, year out."

Veuvelicious started a $2.25 favourite and scored by 3-1/4 lengths over Careless ($5) who chased gamely but was no match for the winner.

Gouldian ($7) also made ground to for third, another 1-1/2 lengths away.

Stanley confirmed Veuvelicious would back up in the Group One Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick next Saturday provided she did well during the week.

"I can't see why not. She's the right horse to back up but I won't make any rash decisions until I see how she pulls up," Stanley said.

"But I've got a funny feeling she'll be even better next week."
