Bring Something earns another Derby shot

Saturday 12 April 2014, 5:24pm

MELBOURNE April 12 AAP - Bring Something will have his second crack at winning a Derby after outstaying his rivals in Saturday's Listed Galilee Series Final at Caulfield.

Bring Something finished seventh behind Polanski in the Victoria Derby in the spring, but will travel to Adelaide for the Group One South Australian Derby on May 3.

The three-year-old broke his maiden at Cranbourne at his previous outing, but the experience helped him to a strong win in the Galilee Series Final (2400m).

Mark Zahra rode Bring Something confidently, giving the gelding time to settle at the back of the field before circling his opposition to hit the lead early in the straight.

Runner-up De Little Engine ($12) briefly challenged, but the $1.80 favourite powered clear late to score by two lengths.

"He really slugged it out well and he'll be really competitive in the SA Derby," Zahra said.

Zahra noted the Ken Keys-trained galloper would enjoy the lesser competition in the South Australian Derby, but hoped Bring Something could make the required improvement to reach Group One standard.

"I'm not sure what else is around for it (the Derby) with most of the good ones in Sydney," Zahra said.

"As long as he hasn't peaked, the Derby will be good for him."

Honey Steel's Gold ($17) made ground from beyond midfield to finish third.
