Singleton racing fine donated to charity

Friday 14 March 2014, 5:58pm

Charity will benefit from last year's public slanging match between John Singleton and racing's Waterhouse family.

In what has been described as an industry first, Singleton's fine for his part in the More Joyous affair will be donated to a charity which has long benefited from Singleton's support.

Racing NSW fined Singleton $15,000 over public comments questioning the fitness of More Joyous before she ran down the track in the All Aged Stakes.

He claimed trainer Gai Waterhouse presented More Joyous unfit for racing and her bookmaker son Tom knew the mare would run below par.

Singleton did not appeal the fine.

Racing NSW boss Peter V'Landys said it was appropriate the fine should be donated to a worthy cause, given Singleton's previously unblemished record and contribution to racing.

"Mindful that Mr Singleton is a strong supporter of the Gut Foundation (Bowel Cancer Foundation) amongst numerous other charitable organisations, Racing NSW will now donate $15,000 to that Foundation," V'Landys said.
