Weir brings up milestone win at Valley

Monday 10 March 2014, 5:33pm

Darren Weir's career-best season has continued with the Melbourne premiership-leading trainer bringing up a milestone at Moonee Valley on Monday.

Victory to Gingerboy in the City Jeep Patriot Handicap (2040m) brought up a winning double for Weir and his 50th metropolitan winner for the season.

"At the start of the year if you said that, it would have been any old odds I would have thought," Weir said.

"But everything is just working well at home and I've got great people around me. They are all working hard, I've got great support from owners and everything is going along nicely."

Weir trained 25 city winners in Melbourne in 2011/12 and his best metropolitan tally was 37 last season.

"This year it's completely unexpected but we'll take it while it's happening," Weir said.

Weir has a 12-win lead over Peter Moody in the Melbourne premiership.

Moody also trained a winner at Moonee Valley with Crime Fighter taking out the City Jeep Compass Handicap (1600m).
