Easter Handicap a target for Little Wonder

Saturday 1 March 2014, 3:14pm

Little Wonder may seek a Group One at 1600m before the end of the season after securing the Group Three Darley Plate at Ellerslie.

The Ardmore galloper won his sixth race, and his fifth at Ellerslie, when he outfinished Rich'n Unhitched and favourite Durham Lad on Saturday.

Little Wonder was a good third in the Group One Railway Stakes on New Year's Day but trainer Steven McKee says he will consider trying the Volksraad colt over more ground in autumn, probably in a race like the Easter Handicap (1600m) at Ellerslie.

"Ideally I'd like to stretch him out some time to a mile (1600m)," McKee said.

"I'm not sure about how the weights are going to work out in the Easter, but it should be good for him."

Little Wonder is still a colt and given his pedigree - he is a three-quarter brother to multiple Group One winner Sir Slick and closely related to Puccini - a race like the Easter Handicap could be enough to earn him a good start at stud.

Jockey Samantha Spratt said Little Wonder was an honest galloper and well up to a win at the top level.

"He's just a horse that wants to win and I don't see any reason why he won't pick up a Group One," she said.
