Report to press Slipper claims

Monday 24 February 2014, 5:11pm

Lee Curtis admits he is throwing Press Report in the deep end in the Silver Slipper but believes the filly has earned the chance to take on the blue bloods.

Press Report, who Curtis bought privately for $15,000, recouped her price tag when second to Darley filly Memorial on debut in November.

The two are among the 10 entries for Saturday's Group Two Silver Slipper (1100m) at Rosehill, the winner of which is exempt from ballot for the $3.5 million Golden Slipper on April 5.

A win would also offset the $150,000 late entry for the Slipper with Press Report not among original nominations.

"When I first got her I didn't think she would be an early two-year-old," Curtis said.

"But she impressed me at her first start and continues to impress me.

"She's a big strong filly. She weighs 500 kilos and looks awesome.

"I can't find a chink in her armour.

"If she runs well and we have to think about whether to pay the late entry, well it's a nice problem to have."

Curtis said Press Report had made natural improvement during a spell and he was pleased with her barrier trial win last week with race jockey Glyn Schofield aboard.

"I'm not under any illusions. It is going to be a tough race," he said.

"But Glyn rode her in the trial and he was happy with her going into this race."

Memorial's trainer Peter Snowden has also entered Ghibellines and will decide in the next couple of days whether to run both or save them for races a week later.

Magic Millions winner Unencumbered heads the Silver Slipper entries and with six starts under his belt, is by far the most experienced.

The Bjorn Baker-trained colt's only defeat came when he finished third over the same course and distance at his second start.

Unencumbered is the second elect in Slipper markets at $8 with Blue Diamond Stakes winner Earthquake the clear favourite at $2.80.
