Tukiyo steps up to open grade at the Farm

Friday 21 February 2014, 3:20pm

A Sydney trip is off for talented mare Tukiyo but rookie trainer Lacey Morrison believes there are feature race wins on her horizon.

Tukiyo will run in the $100,000 Falvelon Quality (1200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday after connections decided not to head to Randwick's Group Three Triscay Stakes over the same distance.

The four-year-old won her last start in Listed company against fillies and mares but Saturday will be her first time in open competition.

"We entered in Sydney more to test the water. It was obvious the Sydney field was pretty strong and we felt Brisbane would be a better option," Morrison said.

"There were a few other reasons. She is a box walker and needs to be able to get into an open yard. It limited our options for stabling down there."

Tukiyo is likely to have a break after the Falvelon although the Listed Weetwood Hcp (1200m) in Toowoomba on April 12 remains an option.

"There are a lot of fillies and mares races around for her in the winter," Morrison said.

"She will run a strong 1600 metres eventually so we have plenty of options open for her."

Morrison, a former top jockey who also had a stint as a steward, has had a wonderful strike rate since taking out her trainer's licence in October.

She has won a dozen races including the $100,000 Magic Millions Maiden with Anyone and the $100,000 Listed Nudgee Quality with Tukiyo.

Tegan Harrison, who won the Nudgee on Tukiyo retains the ride.

"Tegan handled her perfectly last time and the horse goes well for her," Morrison said.

"She is well drawn and has the minimum weight so I would be disappointed if she doesn't run a race," Morrison said.

Sydney visitor Tiger Tees is the early favourite for the Falvelon at $3.80 ahead of Group One placed Fire Up Fifi while Tukiyo is at $17 in TAB markets.
