Knoydart impressive in Hareeba Stakes

Wednesday 12 February 2014, 5:31pm

An explosive Hareeba Stakes victory from Knoydart has convinced top jockey Nash Rawiller the gelding is capable of winning a Group One.

And the manner in which the four-year-old Knoydart put his rivals away in Wednesday's Listed 1200m sprint at Mornington had Darley's Melbourne stable foreman Paul Snowden predicting they might have to raise their sights with the well-bred sprinter.

Knoydart, the $4 favourite, settled midfield in the run taking a three-wide trail before letting down with an impressive turn of foot in the straight to defeat Don't Get Excited by 3-1/4 lengths with 2-3/4 lengths to Hazard third.

"That was electric," Rawiller said.

"He got into a beautiful rhythm, travelled up big time and felt the winner a long way out.

"You've got to be excited by the way he let down."

Rawiller said the gelding, who also won the Listed Canterbury Classic last start, would measure up in a high-pressure Group One handicap.

"He could definitely win a Group One on his day," he said.

Snowden said gelding Knoydart, a son of More Than Ready out of Group One winner Regal Cheer, before this preparation had been the making of the horse.

He said the good speed, on a day when leaders had been winning, suited Knoydart.

"I think we've really got to re-assess," Snowden said.

"We only earmarked another Listed race in two or three weeks' time for him, but maybe we might have to look at something else."
