Rubick has made a massive impression ahead of his Victorian debut but rival trainer Mark Kavanagh insists the Blue Diamond Prelude for colts and geldings will not be an easy race to win.

Rubick steps out in Saturday's Group Three 1100m race at Caulfield and has drawn favourably in barrier two in a full field of 16 plus two emergencies.

Kavanagh's Blue Diamond hope Chivalry has to contend with barrier 16.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Rubick scored an impressive debut win in slick time at Randwick on January 25 to back up a brilliant barrier trial.

He is the $1.75 favourite for the Prelude with last start Moonee Valley winner Chivalry the only other runner under double figure odds at $9.50.

"I think it's a stellar crop of two-year-olds that are all going to need a bit of luck to win the race," Kavanagh told reporters on Thursday when asked if Rubick was the horse to beat.

"Rubick has looked good in a small field in Sydney and has run the times but he's still got to come up against a field of 16 pretty tough horses and it's not going to be easy out there."

Kavanagh was disappointed with Chivalry's draw.

Chivalry hasn't raced since scoring a strong win at Moonee Valley on December 28 at his second start.

The Flemington trainer believes luck in running will play a big part in the capacity field.

"It's back to a situation where there's a lot of traffic in this race and whatever wins on Saturday may not win the Diamond," he said.

"It's very, very level. But with the amount of traffic and the blistering pace that's going to be on in the race, anything can happen."

Glen Boss rides well-bred colt Nostradamus who has the outside gate.

Boss rates Nostradamus the best two-year-old he's ridden this season but admits the barrier makes things tough.

"We'll find out if he's the real deal on Saturday," he said.
