Law to stake early Golden Slipper claim

Monday 3 February 2014, 5:45pm

Breeders' Plate winner Law can cement his Golden Slipper berth early with victory at his second start at Randwick.

Law is one of 13 youngsters entered in Saturday's 1000m handicap, most of which are unraced.

The Gai Waterhouse Waterhouse-trained colt became the first two-year-old stakes winner of the season when he won the Listed Breeders Plate in October and the first stakes winner for his sire Denman.

He races in the distinctive purple and white colours of Denise Martin's Star Thoroughbreds carried to victory by Sebring in the 2008 Slipper.

Martin Paid $90,000 for Law at the Magic Millions sale and he earned $60,000 for his Breeders' Plate win.

"If he wins on Saturday that will give him enough prize money and it's clear sailing to the Slipper," Martin said.

"Gai said he would then have one or two lead-ups and the options are open-ended.

"He has come through his trials in great order and Nash (Rawiller) rides him on Saturday."

Like most people, Martin knew little about Law's dam Lady Cat when she bought the colt.

"I buy horses on type and he was a colt I liked," she said.

"But he has a very attractive pedigree page.

"His dam is a South American Group Three winner and traces back to Storm Cat."

Lady Cat's five wins were from 1500 to 2200 metres while Denman won from 1100 to the 1400 metres of the Group One Golden Rose.

Law is Lady Cat's second foal and is from the first season crop by Denman, a son of champion racehorse and sire, Lonhro.

Second declarations for the $3.5 million Golden Slipper close on Tuesday.
