Former rogue set for Lismore success

Had it not been for the intervention of Tamworth-based Aiden St Vincent, four-year-old gelding Bundeebear would never have made it to the racetrack.

"The horse was basically a rogue early on, in a paddock and destined for the doggers," St Vincent's trainer-brother Kane said.

"Aiden was given the horse.

"He was very timid of humans. For a long time Aiden was the only person who could catch or ride him. He wouldn't go near other people.

"You've just got to be very gentle with him.

"Now, he's quite manageable and we think he's got a future as a stayer."

Bundeebear tackles Saturday's The Lismore Truck Show Cup Hcp (2100m) at Lismore with Michael Heagney in the saddle.

By Lawyer out of the Polish Precedent mare Arlina, Bundeebear has drawn ideally in barrier one.

It's taken time, patience and plenty of TLC to get the gelding up and racing.

"His dam's side is stacked with staying pedigree and we've been keen to step him up in distance," Kane St Vincent said.

"When we took him to Grafton for the carnival he missed a run at Dubbo and was underdone when fourth then backed up a week later and ran on really well.

"Last start we had to go back early from the wide barrier but (rider) Adam Hyeronimus agreed he's looking for more ground. He gets that tomorrow."

Bundeebear finished 1-3/4-lengths fourth to Castlemagne King over 1600m at Grafton on July 11 and followed up by closing well for fifth, beaten 1-1/2-lengths, to Bondit over the same trip there on July 18.

"We left him at Gayna Williams' property just outside Grafton and Aiden has been over to see him a couple of times," St Vincent said.

"He's done really well. The horse in my opinion is still developing, immature to say the least.

"His best is probably twelve months down the track, especially when he learns to get over a bit of ground.

"The (heavy) track is a bit of a question mark, he's never been on it but he gives every indication in trackwork of being able to handle it.

"We're expecting him to run very well."
