Weir opens Caulfield meet with another win

Saturday 25 January 2014, 3:13pm

Premiership-leading trainer Darren Weir closed Friday night's Moonee Valley meeting with back-to-back winners and wasted little time getting on the board at Caulfield with Means A Lot taking out the opening race.

Means A Lot was second-up in Saturday's Carlton Draught Handicap (1400m) and Weir was questioning whether the six-year-old mare might still have been a little underdone for the assignment.

But under a good ride from apprentice Jye McNeil, Means A Lot ($7) sprinted through a gap between runners in the small field in the straight to defeat First Print ($19) by half a neck with favourite Lonhtime ($2.80) a head away third.

"She'll improve a bit still," Weir said.

The trainer thought the mare would have been a great chance had she been third-up, but still gave her a hope if things went her way.

"I thought if she could still get the right run and not do too much work she could still be somewhere around them. She got a great ride and poked her head out at the right time," he said.

Weir went into Saturday's meeting, on the back of a treble at Moonee Valley on Friday night, with a 10-win lead in the Melbourne trainers' premiership.
