Boss closing in on Melbourne Cup record

Monday 5 November 2012, 5:09pm

Glen Boss would like to be remembered as the jockey who won the most Melbourne Cups - and it's hard to say it won't happen.

He already has three, just one shy of Bobbie Lewis and Harry White, and goes into Tuesday's race confident he has the right horse to equal the record.

Until Saturday, Boss didn't have a ride and was prepared to watch from the sidelines until Kelinni won his way into the field with his Lexus victory.

"I was offered a few rides during the week but I was prepared to sit and wait," Boss said.

"I didn't want to take a ride just to have a ride in the Cup.

"Now I'm in with a live chance."

Boss has three Melbourne Cup trophies courtesy of Makybe Diva and plays down his part in the great mares' feats, often saying he was just a passenger.

After the Lexus, premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller made a courtesy call to Glyn Schofield at Rosehill to discuss the Cup ride, but with less than three days for him to lose 2kg, both knew it was out of the question.

Boss was on the spot and comfortable with the 51kg Kelinni will carry and more than impressed by his Lexus win with heavyweight Nash Rawiller aboard.

"What can you say about Chris Waller," Boss said.

"Everything he does is right. His win on Saturday shows the horse is at the top of his game.

"I was impressed with what he did between the 600 and the 400 metres - he really came quickly.

"He's got a good draw and I just have to give him a good ride."

Kelinni will jump from barrier 10 and was backed from $26 to $21 at Monday's Call of the Card.
