West Australian apprentice Aaron Mitchell will be hoping to make an immediate impression in his Melbourne metropolitan debut at Caulfield on the Pat Carey-trained Donna Madeira.

Mitchell, grandson of Perth trainer Wally Mitchell who prepared multiple Group One winner Placid Ark, is on loan to Carey for three months and landed his first Victorian winner at Mornington on Wednesday.

"He's a really nice lad who has a good head on his shoulders," Carey told Melbourne radio station RSN.

"He's got a good demeanour about him and I really hope he goes well.

"I had a look at a few of his tapes from Perth and obviously he's quite tall but he certainly looks neat enough to me and horses seem to run pretty well for him."

Donna Madeira is Mitchell's only ride at Caulfield on Saturday in the Claire Andrews Handicap (1000m) and the filly is rated a $10 chance with last-start Moonee Valley winner Maroon Bay favourite at $4.40 ahead of Romancingthestone at $4.60.

Romancingthestone was beaten a half-head by Maroon Bay over 1000m at Moonee Valley on December 20 but trainer Robbie Griffiths is hoping the filly can turn the tables.

Romancingthestone has won just one of her 11 starts but has placed on another six occasions and is searching for the first win of her campaign.

Griffiths hopes the 3kg claim of apprentice Josh Cartwright helps Romancingthestone's cause.

"She doesn't find the winner's stall much but she tries hard," Griffiths said.

"She has been one of those ones that has run seconds and thirds. She has only won one of 11 but she's had six placings."

Griffiths said Romancingthestone, who hasn't finished worse than fifth in six starts this campaign including four placings, had trained on well since the Moonee Valley race.

"The race on Saturday has got the VOBIS bonus plus the normal prizemoney so there's good prizemoney at this time of year and the race is restricted to fillies over 1000 metres," Griffiths said.

"So we're hoping she can go one step better."
