O'Dea stablemates in Eagle Farm quinella

Wednesday 1 January 2014, 3:24pm

Trainer Steve O'Dea's was spot on when he predicted there wasn't much between his two runners in the Bollinger Handicap at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

In, fact at the finish there was only a short head between Fairytale Belle ($6) and Beatniks ($5.50) when they hit line after a duel over the final 200m.

"I thought there wasn't much between and obviously I wasn't far off," O'Dea said.

"They are both nice fillies and they will win plenty of races between them," O'Dea said.

He said Fairytale Belle had appreciated getting into the clear with plenty of galloping room while Beatniks had raced a lot more truly.

The O'Dea pair were five lengths in front of the favourite Harmonized Feeling ($4.60).

Earlier, trainer Rod Hurley's decision to halve his team to eight continued to pay dividends when he got his first Eagle Farm winner with Whispering Tess in the Sky Racing Maiden (1800m).

"I decided to stick with the horses capable of running well in town and it is starting to pay off," said Hurley, a former jockey.

Meanwhile, the strain on south-east Queensland jockey numbers for the Magic Millions carnival was increased with Rick McMahon confirming he will not appeal his eight-meeting suspension incurred on Benny's Button at Toowoomba on Tuesday.

However, Jackson Morris has appealed a month's suspension for weighing in light at Beaudesert last Saturday.
