The Chris Waller stable pulled off a double at Flemington on Saturday with Instrumentalist and Index Linked.

But the difference in winning could not have been greater.

While Instrumentalist led from the middle stages, Index Linked flew home to win in impressive style.

Index Linked, favourite at $2.80, was having his first look at Flemington and Waller's Melbourne representative Justine Hales said the six-year-old gelding seemed to relish the different way of going.

"He seems to go really well this way and clears away from the field," she said.

Ridden by Glen Boss, Index Linked came from eighth at the 800m to reel in the leaders and beat Angelology ($8) by 1-3/4 lengths with Prizum ($18) another three quarters of a length away third.

Hales said she didn't know Waller's definite plans for Index Linked but the horse could stay in Melbourne for another 2000m Flemington race on New Year's day.

Boss said the key to Index Linked was getting him to relax.

"The further we got into the race he really switched off and when I asked him to come up on the bridle and sprint, he was instant," Boss said.

"He was very soft, he beat them easily.

"Chris pulled the right rein in bringing him down here and there might be another race for him."
