Barakey to join a Melbourne trainer

Monday 9 December 2013, 6:40pm

Perth Group One winner Barakey will be transferred to a Melbourne stable after the Lightning Stakes at Flemington.

Trainer Jim Taylor said the Group One Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) at Flemington in February would likely be the sprinter's swan song for his stable before he went to a Melbourne trainer.

"It was my decision," Taylor told Racing Victoria.

"The owners left it up to me."

Taylor said the new trainer had not been confirmed so he did not want to mention any potential names.

Barakey won the 2012 Group One Winterbottom Stakes in Perth and campaigned unsuccessfully in Melbourne earlier this year.

He was scratched at the barriers in the Oakleigh Plate and then pulled up with a knee injury after being unplaced in the Newmarket Handicap forcing him off the scene for months.

The gelding resumed with a Group Three win in Perth in late October before finishing ninth in the Winterbottom last month, won by Buffering.

He has won 12 of his 14 starts.

"He's all right now but he pulled up with a virus after the Winterbottom," Taylor said.

"He had a high temperature for five days but he's back to normal now.

"The horse that ran third, Watermans Bay, it has never got close to Barakey in its life. He just wasn't at his best."

Barakey returns to work next week and Taylor said the sprinter would travel to Melbourne during the week of the Lightning in February.
