Vienna Royale to resume in Phelan Ready

Sunday 8 December 2013, 4:54pm

Impressive debut winner Vienna Royale is primed to begin his Magic Millions countdown at Doomben.

Trainer Tony Gollan has cleared Vienna Royale to return in Saturday's Phelan Ready Stakes (1010m) with Michael Cahill to ride.

The Phelan Ready is run over the same course and distance as Vienna Royale's 5-1/2 length win on October 5.

The son of Falvelon led throughout, prompting Gollan to declare him an ideal type for the Magic Millions Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 11.

After Vienna Royale's win, Gollan gave the colt several weeks in the spelling paddock to continue his development.

"He had a jump-out last Tuesday and went quite good in that and is ticking over nicely," Gollan said.

"We've had the Phelan Ready earmarked for him after his first start and he's had a nice preparation leading into it."

Gollan was impressed with the tactical speed Vienna Royale displayed at his first start but believes he has plenty of scope for improvement.

"He's not completely bomb proof but he does have really good gate speed and he puts himself right up there which is a good asset for a two-year-old," he said.

"At his first start he wanted to get away from the rail down the straight. He's still learning and has a long way to got but I'm pretty happy with him."

All going well after the Phelan Ready, the colt will have one more start before the Millions.

As well as Vienna Royale, Gollan will have black type representation on Saturday with Listen Son in the Listed Brisbane Handicap (1600m).

"He's been a real rainmaker lately," Gollan said.

"We've had to scratch him a couple of times lately because of wet tracks but he's in great shape and hopefully the weather will be on our side this time."

Gollan said Spirit Of Boom would have another three weeks at Eureka Stud on the Darling Downs before he is aimed at the Group One Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield in February, a race he finished third in this year.

Spirit Of Boom was rated desperately unlucky by Gollan when he finished fourth to Buffering in the Group One Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot on November 23 after being badly checked mid-race.
