Fitness key to Romancingthestone chances

Friday 6 December 2013, 4:55pm

Cranbourne trainer Robbie Griffiths is banking on Romancingthestone's fitness edge to compensate for a possible shortfall in class at Caulfield.

"It's hard to see the filly would be good enough to beat Lord Of The Sky and horses like that, but if they make a blue she's got the fitness to pounce," Griffiths said.

With Jye McNeil's 3kg claim, Romancingthestone drops 5.5kg from the 58kg she carried over 1200m at Moonee Valley last Saturday week.

And Saturday's National Patient Transport Plate is 200m shorter, something that gives Griffiths extra confidence.

"Although the competition is better, she gets the opportunity to come back to a distance she is stronger at and also has the big drop in weight," Griffiths said.

Griffiths has three other horses racing at Caulfield with Flash Of Doubt looking to have the most difficult assignment in the $120,000 Listed Doveton Stakes (1000m).

"From barrier three she will get a good run but in a field of 10 you can make a case for almost every starter," Griffiths said.

He says the five-year-old mare has a good record over the distance with six wins "but she needs everything to go right".

"If the ground is rain-affected that enhances her chances but it's a raffle," he said.

"She's probably not as good as some of them but she is fit and well and is coming off a good run at the Valley."

He says You Can Dance in the TROA Support NJT Handicap (1200m) can only improve after a four-week break after her eighth in the Group Three G H Mumm Stakes, while Horacio, in the National Jockey's Trust Handicap (1200m), has good second-up form but needs a dry track.

Griffiths will also be chasing stakes success in Adelaide with Dash For Viz.

Dash For Viz will line up as a $26 chance in the City Of Marion Stakes (1200m).
