John Messara elected chairman of ARB

Friday 6 December 2013, 1:59pm

Prominent owner-breeder John Messara will chair the Australian Racing Board in addition to his duties as chairman of Racing NSW.

Messara replaces former Racing Victoria chairman Michael Duffy.

The ARB is the national body representing the Principal racing authorities of Australia's eight states and territories.

A former stockbroker, Messara established Arrowfield Stud in 1985 and has built it into the leading Australian-owned breeding operation.

"I strongly support a national approach to the key regulatory and integrity functions of racing," Messara said.

"In this, the ARB plays an essential role in formulating uniform rules and co-operation between the states and territories."

Messara said Duffy's term had been one of change for the ARB.

"Michael's term as chairman saw an overhaul of the rules of racing relating to integrity, including the introduction of minimum penalties and the ban on anabolic steroids," Messara said.

"He was an outstanding leader who enjoyed the respect and support of all jurisdictions."

Kevin Dixon, chairman of Racing Queensland, will be the ARB's deputy chairman.
