Queen awarded top owners' honour for 2013

Friday 6 December 2013, 11:43am

The Queen has been named Owner of the Year for 2013 by the Racehorse Owners Association.

The accolade is in recognition of her first success in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and her unparalleled commitment and contribution to the sport of horse racing over more than 60 years.

It came at the 32nd annual Horseracing Awards and the award was collected on the Queen's behalf by her racing manager John Warren and his daughter Susannah.

"British racing has been incredibly fortunate to benefit from Her Majesty The Queen's lifelong support and the remarkable success of Estimate in the Ascot Gold Cup was a very special occasion for the entire sport," ROA president Rachel Hood said.

Estimate was voted Outstanding Stayer, with the mare's trainer Sir Michael Stoute, representing Her Majesty, collecting the award for her.

Horse of the Year and Outstanding Chaser was the Caroline Mould-owned Sprinter Sacre, unbeaten over fences and a winner at each of the big three spring meetings, the Cheltenham Festival, the Grand National meeting at Aintree and the Punchestown Festival.

A second owner who took two awards was Sheikh Joaan Al Thani for his Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Treve (Outstanding Middle Distance Horse and Outstanding Filly and Mare).
