Photo-finish fortunes turn for Tommy Berry

Wednesday 27 November 2013, 4:14pm

Three days after Tommy Berry was forced to swallow a controversial photo-finish decision that denied him a dead-heat victory, the young jockey has found himself on the right end of the camera.

On Sunday, the judge deliberated for several minutes to separate Berry and his twin brother Nathan after the pair crossed the finish line together in the $100,000 Goulburn Cup.

Nathan's mount Any Day Will Do was eventually declared the winner by a nose, despite Tommy protesting on the basis the image showed both horses' noses were touching the line.

There was no need for a protest at Canterbury on Wednesday when Tommy got everything out of the Gwenda Markwell-trained Turf Hero ($9.50) to cling to a narrow win in the Tab.com.au Handicap (1100m).

The eight-year-old trailed the speed and hit the front halfway up the straight, holding off a mare half his age in race favourite Limitation ($3.40).

While punters on course were unsure who had won, the photo-finish image showed Turf Hero held on by a nose, while Elusive Lad ($16) was another short neck behind in third.

"After my photo (finish) on Sunday I probably thought I got beaten again," Berry said of the tight result.

Nathan Berry's ride in the race, Pillow Talk ($13), finished fourth.
