Solsay makes it a Valley double for Kent

Saturday 23 November 2013, 5:49pm

Cranbourne trainer Mick Kent claimed his second win of the meeting when Solsay won the City Jeep Wrangler Handicap at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

It followed his win in the first race with Miss Steele.

Kent had given jockey Jackie Beriman explicit instructions to ride the one-paced six-year-old gelding three deep and she followed them to the letter.

"He needs to be ridden aggressively," said Kent.

Kent said Solsay had run well at Flemington when fifth to Bello before going for a spell in June.

Beriman had Solsay ($8) well placed near the lead and they broke away from the pack at the turn.

Solsay managed to maintain a one-length lead to the winning post with Magnus Reign ($8) second and Unscrupulous ($7.50) a short head away third.

Kent said there were no big autumn plans for Solsay at this stage.

Beriman said the meeting had been one for swoopers and sitting where she was in the lead at the turn, she felt exposed to a challenge.

"It's been a swoopers' track and sitting where I was it was a bit of a task, but he's just too strong," she said.

"He's a high-rolling, cruising horse who sits at one speed and just keeps going at that speed."
