Millions carnival focus for Caliente

Friday 15 November 2013, 2:07pm

The Magic Millions carnival will be the focus for Caliente if she performs up to the expectations of trainer Bruce Hill at Eagle Farm.

Hill is confident Caliente can recapture the form that won her last year's Mode Plate at Eagle Farm when she came from last to run down subsequent Group Three winner Sookie.

"The 1000 metres on Saturday might be a tad short for her but the bit of rain that we've had in the past few days certainly won't harm her chances," Hill said.

The Magic Millions Fillies and Mares Handicap (1300m) at the Gold Coast in January is a race Hill is keen to target for Caliente if her form is strong enough.

Caliente failed in two starts during the winter carnival before Hill sent her to the spelling paddock.

"A few niggling things were affecting her and she was just struggling a little bit so I decided to pull up stumps and start again," he said.

"For most of her career she's always had a few little issues and we've had to look after her but she's pretty good now and hopefully we can hold her together."

Hill was impressed by Caliente's effort to finish second to Batten The Hatches in a 900m barrier trial at the Gold Coast on October 29.

"She pulled up well afterwards and the winner of that trial has come out and won since so the form looks to be pretty strong," he said.

Caliente will be ridden by Jim Byrne and is rated a $7 chance in Fixed Odds betting for the Buccini Transport Handicap (1000m).

Elmantosh has been scratched from the Desiree Gill Memorial Handicap (1400m) by Hill who has decided to start the four-year-old at Rosehill instead.

"Even though he's got to carry 58 kilograms he's a really nice horse in the making," Hill said.

"The other reason for going down there is the race is worth nearly twice as much as the Eagle Farm race."
