Public funeral for Desiree Gill

Friday 15 November 2013, 12:05pm

A public funeral will be held for popular jockey Desiree Gill who died from injuries received in a fall at the Sunshine Coast.

The funeral service will be held at The Pavilion at the Gympie Turf Club at 1030 (AEST) on Monday where family and friends will gather to pay their respects to Gill.

Jockeys wore black armbands at Eagle Farm on Wednesday and will do so again on Saturday as a mark of respect for Gill.

The National Jockeys Trust and Racing Queensland has set up the Desiree Gill fund with $20,000 prize money from the two abandoned races at the Sunshine Coast last Saturday diverted to kick start the fund.

Gill was the South-East Queensland Country Premiership Jockey of the Year for the past two seasons and rode four winners and a third placing from only five rides at the Bundaberg race meeting on Melbourne Cup day.

The 45-year-old was an experienced rider and had also been employed by Racing Queensland as a mentor to young jockeys.
