Dothraki winning the Listed Hilton Hotels & Resorts Stakes

Dothraki (Mossman ex Volantis) took out 1st place the Listed Hilton Hotels & Resorts Stakes at Flemington on Saturday (Emirates Stakes Day), and in doing so capped off a fruitful Spring Carnival for the Triple Crown team that also saw fellow 3YO Charlie Boy salute stylishly in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes.

Dothraki's win on Saturday escalated his career earnings to in excess of $200,000 in addition to adding further black type to his name.

Trainer Gerald Ryan decided to take the Mossman colt south following a third place in the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes at Randwick and advice from Jay Ford that he would appreciate the slower tempo over a 1400m trip.

The addition of a nose roll also seemed to work wonders and when coupled with Ron Hutchison award winner - Nash Rawiller, Dothraki’s victory in the Hilton Hotels & Resorts Stakes was all but sealed.

Crossing over swiftly from the wide barrier to sit second on race favourite Barbed’s flank, Dothraki travelled nicely throughout the trip before accelerating and hitting the lead in the straight.

Rawiller commented that he got a little bit wayward out front however dug deep and found really well when the other horses started coming at him to hit the line strongly.

This waywardness saw Rawiller defend his mount in a post-race protest by second place jockey James Winks, however Stewards concluded it did not have a bearing on the outcome of the race, and therefore the objection was dismissed and correct weight declared.

With Ryan commenting post-race that Dothraki “still has a lot to learn and a lot to give” it seems the Triple Crown team of owners can look forward much more time in the winner’s circle with this handsome colt.

Dothraki was a $45,000 purchase by Triple Crown’s Chris and Michael Ward from the 2012 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale and is out of the Flying Spur mare Volantis.

Sadly, Volantis passed away in 2011 however Triple Crown had the foresight to secure her last born foal from this years Magic Millions National Yearling Sale, a Big Brown colt who is a very nice type and is currently in training with Bjorn Baker at Warwick Farm.
